Remarkably, Spain had won only one previous World Cup match prior to this year’s competition. Pre-tournament favourites such as USA, Germany, Brazil, and the Netherlands suffered early exits. Co-host Australia were defeated by Sweden in the match for third place on Saturday (August 19).
Team Canada’s run at the tournament ended prematurely when they failed to advance past the group stage for the first time since 2011. Next up, Canada will face Jamaica in a two-match total goals series on Friday 22 September in Jamaica and on Tuesday 26 September in Toronto for the final spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
