Club History

Peterborough City S.C. was formed in 1980 with a single men’s team looking to provide the best players in the area a chance to measure up in Ontario’s best leagues. The Men’s team was admitted into the First Division of the Toronto and District Soccer League. Home games were played at King Edward Park where a snow fence was set up around the pitch each Sunday morning and removed after the game. The “enclosure” was a requirement of the league.

The team astounded the league establishment by winning the T & D First Division title in their first year with a season record of 16 wins, 9 ties and only one loss. They were promoted to the league’s top flight Premier Division in the following year where they finished 10th of 14 teams. Marvin Buchan coached the team during the first two years and Hugh McMillan was the manager.

Peterborough City won the T & D First Division title several times following its successful inaugural year, however they had to wait until their fourteenth year in 1993 to claim the T & D Premier Division Championship for the first time.

The team moved to their current home field at Eastgate Park (formerly the site of the city’s snow dump known as Bovis Field) in 1982. Due to the lack of amenities at Eastgate, players used the dressing rooms at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. In 1982-1983 a handful of dedicated enthusiastic volunteers erected the first building on the site consisting of change rooms, washrooms and a meeting room, with materials supplied by the city. As a precursor of things to come, the men’s team conducted free clinics on Saturday mornings at Eastgate for any young boys and girls wishing to improve their soccer skills.

Floodlights were installed at the main field in 1990. The second building, the soccer activity centre, was completed in the spring of 2003, once again thanks to thousands of hours of volunteer labour. In December 2003 the activity centre was renamed the Marvin Buchan Soccer Centre in recognition of Coach Marv’s outstanding contribution to the development of the game in Peterborough from age 8 to …well, we’re still counting.

1992 Peterborough City Players and Executive

Since its humble beginnings in 1980, the club has seen tremendous growth and success. A competitive Women’s team (The Brick) was added in 1990. The club took over responsibility for Peterborough’s six boy’s and three girl’s youth all-star teams from the Peterborough Lions Youth Soccer Club in 1992. The goal was to give players of all ages the opportunity to progress through the club to the senior level. We now have over 500 boys, girls, men, and women competing on 35 representative City teams beginning at 6 years of age. The Youth Teams play at the development and competitive levels in the East Central District Soccer League, the Durham Region Soccer League and the Ontario Soccer IModel League. At the top of our pyramid, the U21 and Senior Teams compete in the Ontario Soccer League and the Ontario Women’s Soccer League.
