PCSC Women Stun O.C. Holders

It was a game that will go down as one of the outstanding achievements in the history of the women’s game at Peterborough City. Earlier today (Sunday, August 11) at Eastgate Park our Senior Women’s team took on the defending champions, King City Royals, in the quarter-final round of the Ontario Cup and came out on top after a nail biting penalty shootout.

The game was tied 1 – 1 after 90 minutes of play in regulation time with Liz Shaughnessy scoring for Peterborough from a beautiful header in the second half to cancel out King City’s first half opening goal. And so it came down to penalty kicks. Peterborough converted all five penalty shots and goalkeeper Riley Gillespie-Friesen made a brilliant save to secure a famous victory.

Having already clinched the Central Region East division of the Ontario Women’s Soccer League and with it promotion to the Provincial division in 2025, the PCSC organization and particularly the women’s coaching staff can be justifiably proud of how far this team has come. “Today was one of the best moments in my coaching career. I am very proud to be associated with this group of women”, said head coach Mike Everson. City now advances to the semi-final round against Union Bradford on August 25. The game will be played at the Esther Shiner Civic Stadium in North York with a 1 p.m. kick-off.
